I’m taking a cue from a similar blogger/designer/author by releasing mermaid photos made with AI for everyone’s free use or just inspiration for the next author’s story. Yes, you can use these on a book cover. Hopefully, this well help out the future algorithms to output better designs as well. What I’ve learned through this process is to embrace the imperfections. We will see how below.
Mermaids don’t need human hands or hair. Their hair can be a living organism like depicted in picture two or you can just change their hands to fins that might help them better swim in the water. Draw inspiration based on how you want them depicted in your story.
More examples of fins replacing hands.

I like this less than the other examples, but it still works.

Toddler mermaids :). Sometimes you just need to see something to find inspiration.

Do Mermaids need human ears? Nope. Think outside the box like A.I.

Mutations occur in fish all the time. Why not mermaids? Give yours one fin and one human arm. Plus waterproof henna tattoos, yes definitely.

Embrace the weird. Burying one’s tail in the sand could be a sign of nerves or embarrassment.

Incorporate culture into a mermaid’s every look. This mermaid says off the coast of Africa mythos to me with her hair.

Consider extending any scales, gills, etc up the arm, neck, and face. Also, anomalies such as this seashell on her tail could be jewelry indicating marriage or a cast for a broken tail.

No eyes, three elongated fingers. This mermaid could be a dangerous siren.

Every ethnicity should be represented on Earth and under the sea as needed to tell a good story.

There shouldn’t be any hard and fast rules when it comes to the hands, but neither should the tail. This reminds me of a cute guppy.

Treat every tail as unique as human fingerprints. Think of it as just one big fashion show.

Of course, the glamorous mermaid never goes out of style.
