Genre: Urban Fiction
The Analysis:
This is the first Urban Fiction novel I’ve read since becoming a writer. It was a huge part of my teenage library, the majority of which I still have. But I had to get back into it since I eventually plan on writing some Urban Fic of my own. A Real Love by Porscha Sterling, lets book review it.
Heres the Blurb:
It seems that Baby Taylor has it all: love, happiness, and a blossoming new career. But when her soon-to-be husband is arrested with federal charges on her wedding day, her life takes a turn in the unexpected.
With nowhere to go, she finds herself at the mercy of her best friend, Mona, and her husband, Memphis. But with the past that Memphis and Baby share, things begin to get even more complicated, and taboo emotions that Baby buried long ago threaten to come to the light.
When she finds herself weak to resist love’s call, will she be strong enough to do what is right, or will she fall victim to the urgings of her heart?
Baby’s fiancee gets sent to jail, broke and homeless, she moves in with her bestie until she can get back on her feet. But Baby has a history with her bestie’s husband. And being in close proximity just might send these two back into each other’s arms. But whats an obvi girl code violation is anything but when you get to know the real evil behind the smile of Baby’s bestie.
Mona, the bestie, is entertaining from page 1 because everything she does is cold and calculating. But the only thing that really gave me a visceral reaction was Memphis coffee habits lol.
So I was maybe two-thirds into the novel when Memphis, the bestie’s husband, makes himself a cup of coffee and then doesn’t drink it. Talking about he doesn’t like coffee. I’m thinking to myself who does that? Make coffee and don’t drink it. Anyhoo back to the summation.
In this, I was a fan of both Baby and Memphis. Although, somehow I feel like something was missing from Memphis. I’m used to my book boyfriends being a little more in touch with there emotions. Still, all in all, he was the real deal.
I also loved Baby and didn’t have a problem with her until shit started hitting the fan and she wasn’t doing anything about it. She knew all of Mona’s secrets and had enough reasons to turn her back, but didn’t. Sure, that could be the markings of a good friend or a fool.
I’m picking a fool, because like girl what she got to do to lose your trust. And where these type of friends at that will let you use and abuse them and still allow you to be there friend in the end? Get these people some therapy. At some point even if you want to be no rat why can’t you just walk away. That was my pet peeve with the ending.
The book also ends on a cliffhanger and it’s clear that the story is not over.
Story At A Glance:
Overall Story:
I really like this story, and hope that Memphis and Baby both find there happy ending.
Pacing:
When I looked at the table of contents I found it curious that it only had 13 chapters. But when I got to the end with the cliffhanger it certainly made sense. This story has been split up into two parts. But I do think that there’s enough of a finality to this one that it doesn’t leave you too angry. But some questions still go unanswered.
Characterization:
Mona gets the book award for best character. She was fully fleshed out and was an evil something, something.
World/Building Setting:
Definitely got a picture of the environment and everyone’s mindset.
Language:
Simple and understandable.
Feeling:
Curiosity to know more.
Recommendation: Yes
