You need only browse Amazon to see that thousands of authors publish everyday. Yet, when I first debut on the scene, many people told me that it had always been there dream to publish a book. Right before espousing the hundreds of reasons why they were never able to do it. So before I grab on to this notion of being a little fish in a big pond. I try to remember that there are still fish (aka people) out there who haven’t even gotten in the water yet. So why write?
Before I hit publish on my first book I didn’t even think of the competition. The readers were always my main concern. In my mind, there was no competition. Every reader out there was like me, In love with a good story. So here’s why TRS BOOKS came to be.
3 Reason I Write
There are obviously more than just 3, but these are the three that created TRS BOOKS:
Why Write: For The Stories That Need To Be Told
“Books and doors are the same thing. You open them, and you go through into another world.” — Jeanette Winterson.”
Any author worth there salt will tell you that the characters have to be real to you, before the reader will believe they are. That goes the same for me, even before I’ve written or typed the first letter of any of my books. As soon as I saw a photo on Pinterest. Katsi Rae Cataldi, of Freedom to Rarity, was born and she wanted me to tell her story. Even now, pieces of future stories come to me in crumbles begging to get out of my head, and on to the page. There literally doors to other worlds, and I want others to experience the joy those stories bring.
I’m also an active tv aficionado, as well as an avid reader. In each of those moments, I’ve rewritten a story countless times in my head. As I said in my about page, we’ve all been there. Rewriting a show that we love, that we feel has been butchered one way or another. We’re actively seeing another part of that world being played out, and the opportunities that it could bring. I’m just one of those people that believe that I can bring those stories to life.
We can live a thousand lives through the stories that are being told.
Why Write: For The Positive Impact
“Each book was a world unto itself, and in it I took refuge.” — Alberto Manguel (A History of Reading)
There was a time when I viewed reading, and watching tv shows as nothing more than pure entertainment. Although there is that, it wasn’t until I reconnected with God that I realized that it was much more. Once I click publish, I’m sharing something I created with the world. That mark I leave on the world can leave a bad taste in someone’s mouth or be the catalyst they need for change.
I completely missed the fact that, the first thing you learn in high school is that a person’s writing can have longevity far after the person has been deceased. We’ve all been stuck reading Shakespeare one time or another. Or watching an old tv show on reruns, wondering where did all the good family shows go. Once that book is out of my hands and into the hands of a reader, there is no telling how they will perceive the images presented in it.
So I write not to change the world but to leave some positivity behind.
Why Write: For The Romance Of It All
“We are all fools in love.” — Jane Austen (Pride and Prejudice)
That’s certainly true, and an exact representation of why I decided to write it. We’ve all experienced bad love, falling in and out of love, and hopefully finding the one. But this played out in my book covers.
If most people took stock of their bookshelves or kindles, they might agree that it contains more than one genre of book. Mine personally includes YA – Coming of Age novels, right next to the Paranormal Novels, right next to my Harlequin Romances. And why not? I’m in love with good storytelling. But I loved them all because I loved the couples.
While this might not apply to everyone, my ideal reader will identify with going into a bookstore and having to search through the whole thing until you figure out just what you’re in the mood for. Not necessarily the specific genre.
However, I did realize how unique my reading habits were while attending a group. Where I was asked, what’s your favorite genre to read? To which I replied, everything. Only to receive the response, okay, but what specifically do you like to read? Everything. Music Lovers will feel my pain here. Now, if you asked what do I have more of, I’d say Harlequin Romances, followed by Dark YA – Coming of Age Novels. However, that answer doesn’t narrow it down for the person asking. Why should I narrow down my writing style? My writing should be as eclectic as my reading.
I also don’t intend to hide my other genres under pen names like so many other authors do. I write romances across all subgenres and I’m proud of it.
The most natural option for me is to write romance.
